So... I just discovered that it is possible to spot reduce fat.

No this is no April fools joke. It is December :)

So, I was watching a video by Jeremy Ethier, a popular fitness influencer on YouTube.

In this video, he discussed an interesting point: it is possible to somewhat spot-reduce fat. Surprising, right?

Let me break it down.

A study split participants into two groups. Both groups had the same amount of body fat and consumed the same daily calorie intake. They also worked out four times per week.

  • Group 1 did 50 minutes of cardio.

  • Group 2 did 30 minutes of cardio plus some ab workouts.

The results? The group that incorporated ab workouts had significantly less fat around their belly.

But does this mean you can spot-reduce fat with just ab workouts?
Nope. The fundamentals still matter.

The key factor here is achieving a relatively low body fat percentage—somewhere around 10-15%—to see defined abs. So if you’re 50 pounds overweight, doing crunches alone won’t give you visible abs. Sorry to break it to you, but that’s just not going to happen.

The takeaway:
While it is possible to spot-reduce fat slightly with ab workouts, your overall body fat percentage remains the most critical factor.

So What Ab Exercises Should You Do?

Focus on exercises that actually target your abs.

  • Avoid static movements like planks.

  • Instead, go for cable crunches or weighted crunches.
