It's All About Emotional Self-Control

The One Skill to Master All Other Skills with Ease

Throughout my life, I’ve mastered skills in different areas:

  • Fitness

  • Coding

  • Social skills

Now, I’m on the road to mastering business skills.

Let me tell you this:

All of the above-mentioned skills—and honestly, all skills in general—need one thing to thrive:

Emotional self-control.

This is absolutely crucial, especially for mastering business skills. But, it applies to every skill.

After mastering those previous skills, I discovered one universal truth: they all require you to practice the basics.

Yep, just the basics.

So, if you want to become a pro or master in any skill, just focus on doing the basics at a very high level.

How do you become good at the basics?

By doing them over and over and over again.

Think about it:

  • Fitness: It’s all about doing the basic exercises—squats, push-ups, deadlifts, whatever.

  • Coding: Nail the fundamental paradigms and principles.

  • Social skills: Ask high-quality questions and really listen.

Those are the basics of each domain. Just do them repeatedly. Mastery comes through repetition.

So, what does this have to do with emotional self-control?

Everything.

Because you have to do it over and over again, no matter what. There will be days when you feel amazing and motivated, but there will also be days when you feel like absolute dogshit.

Oh, and trust me—there will be plenty of dogshit days.

Those are the days when you’re doubting yourself, when your partner leaves you, when you’ve barely slept, or when life just punches you square in the face.

And on those days, you still need to practice the basics of your skill. You have to do it despite whatever emotion you’re feeling in that moment.

Every time you take action despite how you feel, you’re strengthening your control over your emotions.

At the end of the day, it’s your actions that dictate your results—not how you feel.

Here’s something a little messed up but 100% true:

Most people act based on their emotions. They don’t control their emotions; their emotions control them. And guess what? Those emotions are often influenced by other people.

So, indirectly, other people are controlling their actions.

Think about that for a second.

So, how do you take control of your emotions?

  1. Monitor them. Start paying attention to what you’re feeling and why.

  2. Track them. Keep a journal or log of your emotional states if you need to.

  3. Act despite them. Take the right action no matter how you’re feeling.

Because, at the end of the day, it’s your actions that shape your future. Don’t let your emotions dictate your actions.

That’s it for this email!

I’ll dive deeper into emotional self-control in future emails. And don’t worry, I’ve got more fitness-related content coming your way, too.
