It Is Your Duty to Unlock Your Full Potential
I didn’t have a good childhood. Being bullied and having no friends made me feel less than human for the first decade of my life. But looking back, this was both a blessing and a curse. It forced me to make a drastic change—I didn’t want to be the same person forever.
Bullying gave me many insecurities, with my biggest one being my social skills. Growing up in the Netherlands without speaking Dutch for the first five years only made things worse, and I developed severe social anxiety. I could barely speak, even to my family.
Imagine being 12 years old and unable to communicate purely out of fear. I’m not asking for pity here, just trying to paint a picture of how tough things were.
When I finished primary school, I made a promise to myself that I would be a different person in high school. And that’s exactly what I did.
High school marked the start of my self-improvement journey. I had no idea how to begin, so I turned to YouTube for answers. Back then, YouTube was still in its infancy, but somehow, I stumbled upon the concept of self-improvement. The idea of improving myself to become who I wanted to be blew my mind.
So, I started with my biggest insecurity: social skills.
Nowadays, people don’t believe I used to have massive social anxiety. They see me as an extroverted person who talks to everybody. But little do they know how tough it was and how long it took to get here.
I tackled my social anxiety by following tips and tricks from YouTube channels like Charisma on Command. It was awkward at first, and I hated it, but forcing myself to step out of my comfort zone built a belief that I could change my situation, no matter how hard it seemed.
The next challenge on my list was my body. I was super skinny as a teenager, and I decided to change that by researching fitness online. I found channels like SixPackShortcuts and Athlean X and binge-watched countless hours of content. But, of course, the key was implementation. Watching videos isn’t enough—you have to put in the work.
Everyone told me I couldn’t build muscle because I was too skinny and that genetics would hold me back. But I didn’t care what they said. I believed I could change it, and I did. Fast forward 14 years, and I’ve achieved my dream physique.
Now, I’ve ventured into more skills and hobbies, including coding, and I’m working on unlocking my potential there too. Not many people fully unlock their potential in anything, and that’s something I can’t understand. For me, it’s crucial to push myself to the limits in whatever I do, especially in fitness.
My motivation comes from knowing I have only one life. I remind myself of this every day. It’s my duty to unlock my fullest potential—not just for myself but for those around me.
