Downsides of Being Overweight.
The hidden downsides that most people aren’t talking about.
More than a third of the U.S. population is overweight.
And it’s not just in the U.S.—even in my home country, the Netherlands, the number of overweight people is rising fast.
I used to be overweight.
Yep, me.
This is a photo of me right after the lockdown.
During that time, I ate some of the worst foods imaginable—pizza, fries, hamburgers… you name it. Naturally, I gained a crap ton of weight, about 18kg (x lbs) to be exact.
It got so bad that my wiener was barely visible.
Yeah, it was really that bad.
During that time, I noticed a few things that most people don’t talk about.
1. My girl was visibly turned off
Back then, I had a girlfriend. I won’t get into the details of our relationship, but we had a pretty healthy sex life.
That completely changed once I gained all that weight.
I could tell she wasn’t feeling it. At all.
And honestly? I don’t blame her.
I looked like a bean bag.
2. I got tired way more easily
Even though my strength went up (since I weighed more), I got tired a lot quicker.
Everything took more effort.
Even lifting weights started to feel like a chore. And because of that, every other aspect of my life took a hit.
Without energy, you can’t do a whole lot.
And if you think about it, it makes sense—I was carrying around an extra 18kg everywhere I went.
3. Grogginess
Besides the physical downsides, I also noticed some mental ones.
For those who don’t know, I’m a programmer/coder, so I need to use my brain to cook up code.
But because I was constantly tired and low on energy, thinking straight became a lot harder.
My mind wasn’t clear at all.
Coding is a mental sport—sometimes you solve a problem in minutes, other times it takes hours.
But when I was overweight, I made countless small mistakes that I normally wouldn’t make.
There are many more downsides to being overweight.
But these are the biggest ones I personally experienced.
The good news?
I came out on the other side—fit and confident in my body again.
