Calisthenics, weightlifting, etc.—which one is the best?
Which one is the best for building muscle?
I have tried almost everything in the gym: calisthenics, circuit training, body pump, weight training, yoga (yes, even yoga), and other fitness activities. So, it's safe to say I have a bit of knowledge about all of them.
But which one is the best?
To be more specific, which one is the best for building muscle?
I can say this with 100% certainty: weightlifting. Without a doubt.
This is not an opinion; it’s a fact.
While yoga and Pilates are excellent for stretching, flexibility, and other aspects of overall health, they aren’t particularly beneficial for building muscle.
What about calisthenics, though?
Calisthenics practitioners often have impressive physiques. Yes, they absolutely do. But here’s the thing: building muscle through calisthenics is far more challenging.
The main issue with calisthenics is that it requires a high level of skill, and it’s much harder to isolate specific muscle groups. Don’t get me wrong—of all the mentioned fitness activities, calisthenics is by far the most effective next to weightlifting. However, weightlifting is miles ahead when it comes to building muscle.
So why is weightlifting superior for building muscle compared to the other options?
The answer is simple: weightlifting is specifically designed to build muscle in the most effective way possible.
A major reason for this is isolation exercises.
Movements like bicep curls, various tricep extensions, and the countless leg and shoulder-specific exercises are all designed to isolate individual muscles and promote growth in targeted areas.
Think of it like using a magnifying glass and sunlight.
The sunbeam represents your energy, and the magnifying glass is your workout plan.
The way you position (or structure) the magnifying glass determines how narrow the energy beam becomes and how quickly it burns.
In fitness terms, the more isolated the muscle training, the faster it develops.
